MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The University of Akron volleyball team held its own but struggled to find its rhythm down the stretch on the final day of the Pepsi Panther Invitational, falling to Bradley in straight sets on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Klotsche Center.
All-Tournament Team selection Amanda Bedell (Hudson, Ohio) paced the Zips (1-2) with 10 kills on the day while defensive specialist Brenna Mack (Mound, Minn.) posted a match-high 16 digs against the Braves (2-1).
Senior setter Karley Kusan (Columbus, Ohio) connected on 26 assists while junior Jessica Kloehn (Milwaukee, Wis.) contributed five block assists and two kills.
"We continue to show flashes of what we are capable of becoming as a team," said head coach Tom Hanna. "We are excited to get back in the gym Monday and tighten some things up."
UA saw an early first set lead dwindle away to a 5-all tie that was broken up by a 4-0 run from Bradley. Trailing by as many as eight, the Zips recovered for three consecutive scores late in the game to make it 23-17 but would not get closer than that.
Akron was unable to recover after falling behind early in the second set, but had its best shot to even the score in the third. The Zips fought through 14 tie scores until Bradley broke a 22-all tie with three straight points to close Akron's window of opportunity.
UA will be back in action next weekend at the Loyola/UMBC Tournament on Sept. 2-3 in Baltimore, Md. The Zips will start the weekend with a doubleheader against UMBC (10:30 a.m.) and Delaware St. (5 p.m.) before taking on Loyola on Saturday at 1 p.m.
