AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis officially opened its fall home schedule on Friday, Sept. 23, hosting its own Akron Shootout at the Outdoor Tennis Facility.
"Sweeping all six singles matches from defending Horizon League Tournament Champions YSU was a great start in singles for us," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "However, we struggled a bit in doubles, not taking advantage of the opportunities we were presented with. We also did not execute properly in specific areas, but we will continue to work diligently."
In singles action against Youngstown State, Akron won all six matches. At No. 1, Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) overpowered Dominika Lackova, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) beat Sofia Macias, 6-3, 6-0 while Karalina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8) triumph over YSU's Noëlly Longi Nsimba at No. 3 singles.
Newcomer Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) captured her first win as a Zip, defeating Ana Stroe 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (5) at No. 4 singles. Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) also registered victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, at No. 1, juniors Blinova and Geier defeated Siena's Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi, 6-1. The pair of Knezevich and Maksimava took down Ivana Boberic and Natalie Weaver in a close 7-5 decision at No. 2 doubles.
"I want to thank all of the student, faculty, and staff that came out to support our women's tennis team today," Padgett concluded. "It was wonderful seeing so many people showing their support for us. I hope we will have a similar crowd the rest of the weekend!"
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, with Cleveland State facing Youngstown State in singles. Doubles begin at 1 p.m. with YSU versus Siena, and Akron playing CSU. At 2 p.m., Akron hosts Siena in singles action.
