"Excellent overall performance today by everyone," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "Winning all nine matches played is not easy, so I am proud of the effort put forth today. We continue to have things that we need to improve upon, especially execution in doubles, but all in all, I am certainly happy with how we played."
Blinova and Geier claimed a 7-6 (2) victory over CSU's Bensimon and Schober in No. 1 doubles play while Knezevich and Maksimava defeated Golawska and Spindler in No. 2 doubles, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Newnes and Pedroso paired up to overpower Gbadamosi and Lenoan, 6-1.
"I am looking forward to seeing how we finish tomorrow on day three of a three day tournament," said Padgett. "Everyone will be tired, but we need to mentally and physically push through, and I believe that we will."
In the other first singles round, Cleveland State split with Youngstown while in doubles action, Siena won two of three matches against the Penguins.
All play is round-robin. Team scores are not kept.
Play concludes at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, with Youngstown facing Siena in singles. Doubles begin at Noon with CSU against the Saints, and Akron playing YSU. At 1 p.m., Akron hosts the Vikings in singles action.
