Zips Stay Hot with Big Win Over Miami (Ohio)

OXFORD, Ohio – The Zips won their second straight head-to-head dual meet against Mid-American Conference competition with a 176.5-123.5 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Friday afternoon at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford.
Akron notched 11 first-place finishes and swept the top two spots in five different events.
The afternoon started with the Zips taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay as the team of senior Luka Szynal (Lublin, Poland), junior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), sophomore Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and sophomore Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) won the event with a time of 1:41.96.
Sophomore Madison Myers (Akron Ohio), sophomore Victoria Shaffer (Upper Saint Clair, Pa.), junior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) and freshman Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.41.
Szynal took the top spot in the 200 backstroke in a fleeting time of 1:59.71 and took second in the 100 back behind Myers who captured the race in 54.96.
Fazekas, the reigning MAC Swimmer of the Week, brought home three wins on the day with victories in the 100 freestyle (51.50), 200 freestyle (1:50.50) and the 100 butterfly (54.47).
In the 100 breaststroke, Marrero Munoz edged out a trio of RedHawks and notched the win with a time of 1:03.33, just ahead of Miami's Stephanie Lemire (1:03.67). The junior also notched first place in the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.05, out touching Lemire who finished in 2:17.55.
The Zips swept the top three spots in the 50 free as Engel (23.43), Franz (23.84) and Waggoner (23.91) all finished within a second of each other to earn 16 points.
Freshman Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) and freshman Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) took the top two spots in the 200 butterfly with Bonezzi winning the event in a time of 2:03.41.
Akron closed the meet by taking the top spot in the 400 freestyle relay as sophomore Emma King (Centerville, Ohio), freshman Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio), Franz and Waggoner cruised home in a time of 3:30.34.
Freshman Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) registered a pair of second place finishes for Akron in the 1000 freestyle (10.21.90) and the 400 yard IM (4:26.18).
On the diving boards, senior Paige Kelkenberg (Lockport, N.Y.) took second in the one meter event with a score of 279.38 and third in the three meter with a 287.10 tally.
The Zips will be right back in the pool on Saturday, Jan. 21, with a meet against Ohio State and Pittsburgh at 12 p.m.
