Akron Finishes Eighth Overall, Baylis Places Third

Bridgeport, W.Va. – The Akron Zips men's golf team finished eighth overall with an 883 (+19) team total behind a 3-under par performance from senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

The 54-hole event was played at the Pete Dye Golf Club, a course that is ranked No. 45 on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Courses, and No. 9 on Golfweek's Best Modern Courses. The par 72 course stretches 7,353 yards across 250 acres rolling through the Appalachian Mountains where weather and fog caused delays, forcing round two to be finished on the final day of competition.

Baylis first in team scoring for the Zips and tied for third overall with 3-under par 213 performance. Baylis opened the event with 13 pars, four birdies, and a double bogey for a 70 (-2) score. He ended the first day of competition with a 3-under par score, but was forced to finish the final two holes on Tuesday. On the final day of competition, Baylis carded a birdie and a pair of pars to finish with a 68 (-4) to bring his 36-hole total to 6-under par with 138 strokes and ranked first overall. During the final round, Baylis carded a 75 (+3) after three birdies a pair of bogeys and a double bogey. For the tournament, Baylis recorded 35 pars, 12 birdies, five bogeys, and two double bogeys.

Freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden) finished second in scoring for the Zips with a 222 (+6) tournament total. Sunden opened with an even-par 72 ledger and followed with a 76 (+4) and 74 (+2) to finish 37th overall.

Junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed with a 223 (+7), placing tied for 43rd with rounds of 76 (+4), 72 (E), and 75 (+3), while junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) and sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) rounded out the scoring. Appleby finished tied at 54th overall and McFarland placed 65th with scores of 226 (+10) and 229 (+13), respectively.

The Zips final fall tournament, the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, will span three days, starting on Sunday, Oct. 22 through Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Kilmarlic Country Club in the Outer Banks, N.C.
