Akron Places Sixth at MSU Spring Citrus Challenge

Sorrento, Fla. – The Akron women's golf team placed two golfers in the Top 10 as the Zips finished sixth overall after a final round 304 (+16) at the MSU Spring Citrus Challenge hosted by Morehead State.
"I'm really proud of how Pader played this week," head coach Jenny King said. "Her consistency was big for our team and shows also that her preparation between events has paid off. Two players in the top 10 is great, and we can build on for our next event."
Junior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) and sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) led Akron's team scoring as both players finished inside the Top 10. Her posted three solid scores and finished in the Top 5 after every round. Her opened the tournament with an even-par 72 and followed with a 74 (+2) second-round performance. Her carded a 1-over par 73 final round score for a 219 (+3) three-day tally to finish tied for fourth place overall.
In addition, Nicholson finished ninth overall. The defending Mid-American Conference champion continued to get stronger as the tournament went on. Nicholson shot 74 (+2) on the first day and followed with a 77 (+5) the following. On the final day of competition, Nicholson climbed two spots on the leaderboard with an even-par 72 final round and 223 (+7) overall.
The Zips improved by 15 strokes from last year's 14th place finish as Akron fired the final round 304 score en rout to a 916 (+52) 54-hole tournament total. Akron opened the event with a 302 (+14) and followed with a 310 (+22) second-round score.
Sophomore Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) was third in scoring for the Zips, tying for 28th overall with a 231 (+15) tournament total. Dull fired back-to-back 76 (+4) scores and finished with a 79 (+7).
Freshman Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) and senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) rounded out the team scoring with 243 (+27) and 250 (+34), respectively. Wentworth finished 59th overall, while Velasco-Villanueva finished tied for 74th overall. Junior Mallory Etcheberry (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) added a 74th overall finish as an individual after two consecutive 82 (+10) rounds.
Akron will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, March 27-28, at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. At Kingsmill Resort.
