Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team travels to Columbus, Ohio for their regular-season finale at the 2017 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, at the Ohio State's Scarlet Course, a par-71 that spans 7,455 yards.
"The Robert Kepler Intercollegiate is an outstanding event and one of the most demanding courses we have seen all year," head coach David Trainor said. "The field and golf course are extremely strong. It is a great event to lead us into the MAC Championships."
The 15-team field includes host Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers, and seven Mid-American Conference members. The MAC programs include Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami (OH), and Northern Illinois,
First and second round action is scheduled for Saturday, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET and continuous play for 36 holes. Akron will start on holes 7-10. Sunday's final 18-hole round is slated for tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10 at 8-10:06 a.m. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
The Zips' starting five includes sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), junior George Baylis (Ascot, England), senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.), sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), and freshman Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio).
The Zips' enter the final tune-up before the MAC Championships after posting a 13th place finish at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate. Akron carded an 886 (+34) 54-hole team score at The Club at Irish Creek, a par 71 course that spans 7,099 yards.
Appleby led Akron's scoring efforts with a 218 (+5) tournament total, finishing 42nd overall. Gollwitzer followed with a 219 (+6) 54-hole performance while Grayson finished the two-day event with a 223 (+10) score. Rounding out the tournament scoring efforts were Baylis and Pfeiffer with 229 (+16) totals.
