AKRON, Ohio – Zips' women's tennis coach Brandon Padgett announced on Wednesday the commitment of Tanja Derowski (Bruckmuehl, Germany) to continue her education and playing career at the University of Akron next fall.
"We are extremely excited to have Tanja join our tennis family," Padgett said. "She is extremely disciplined and focused, and we are certain that she will make an immediate impact on our lineup. As with most German players, we have managed to sign over the past few years, Tanja is highly underrated, as she played most of her matches strictly in Germany. Tanja has many outstanding wins over top level players, and we can't wait for the opportunity to work with her on a daily basis."
A five-time "Best of Class" selection from Gymnasium Bad Aibling (high school), Derowski was ranked No. 53 nationally for girls under 16. A participant in the state competition for Latin, she plans to study economics.
"I chose the University of Akron because of the strong athletics and the great team atmosphere," Derowski said. "I felt like I fit in well in Akron, and everybody I talked to was extremely welcoming."
Akron opens the spring schedule on January 18 with Oakland and Chicago State at the La Tuchie Tennis Center.
