AKRON, Ohio – In the final national rankings for the 2017-18 season, University of Akron freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) joined the individual Midwest Region rankings for women's tennis, Oracle/ITA Division I National Rankings announced.
Vasilescu is ranked No. 14 in the Midwest in singles play.
"Miruna had a fantastic first season for us," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "I wish we would have been able to work with her in the fall, but an injury kept her from training, so to have the type of spring season that she did was phenomenal. Her work ethic and desire to constantly push herself to get better is as strong as any player I've ever coached. Now that she has finished her first season, I am confident that she will start to relax and really reach her full potential on court."
Additionally, the soon-to-be sophomore has qualified for the 2018 Oracle/ITA Masters to be held Sept. 20-23 at Pepperdine University. Vasilescu will participate in the double elimination 32-player women's singles draw.
Vasilescu, who finished her inaugural campaign with a 17-5 singles record including 5-3 in MAC play, was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Newcomer of the Year as well as a second-team All-MAC honoree. She opened her collegiate campaign with a perfect 8-0 record. Working her way up the line-up from No. 6 to No. 1, Vasilescu went 8-2 at No. 2 singles. She was named the MAC Singles Player of the Week twice (Jan. 31, March 28) and the Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week (March 8). In doubles action, she went 2-0 at No. 1 with Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles with senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas). Vasilescu was named the team's Most Valuable Player following the season.
