Akron’s Geier & Uljanov Named MAC Doubles Team of the Week

CLEVELAND – The University of Akron redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) captured the final Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week honor of the season, the MAC announced on Wednesday.
The MAC honor is the second for the duo this spring as they also earned Doubles accolades on Feb. 6.
"Anna and Sophia did an amazing job of fighting off two match points for us against Ball State," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "And their perseverance throughout that match helped set the tone for singles as well. I'm extremely happy for them."
In the final week of regular-season action, Geier and Uljanov closed out MAC play with huge victory that earned the Zips the double point in the 4-3 win at Ball State.
At No. 2 doubles, the duo saved two match points and came back to take a 7-5 victory over Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington, giving UA the doubles point.
Overall, Geier and Uljanov stand 15-6 doubles action and 12-6 this spring.
This is the ninth MAC honor for Akron this spring. Geier was named Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 6, Feb. 13, and Feb. 20, while sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) earned Singles honors on Feb. 27 and March 27. Junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Vasilescu earned Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 30 and Feb. 20, while Geier and Uljanov were the Doubles Team on Feb. 6.
Akron earned the No. 2 seed in this weekend's MAC Women's Tennis Championship at Buffalo. The Zips (20-5 overall, 5-2 MAC) earned a quarterfinal round bye and will face the winner of the No. 3 seed Western Michigan (12-10 overall, 4-3 MAC)/No. 6 seed Buffalo (13-7 overall, 3-4 MAC) match in semifinal action on Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m.
