Swimming and Diving Finishes Third in Shamrock Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Akron swimming and diving finished third after the final day of the Shamrock Invitational, with host Notre Dame claiming first place.

The Zips got off to a strong start on day two of the invitational, with junior Brooke Lamoureux (Victoria, Canada) taking second in the 1650 freestyle, finishing with a time of 16:44.34. Senior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) also had an impressive swim, taking sixth at 16:57.10.

In the 200 backstroke, freshman Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) swam a time of 1:58.22, good enough for a fifth-place finish.

Sophomore Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was able to finish fourth in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 50.02.

Junior Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) turned in Akron's only first-place finish of the afternoon in the 200 breaststroke, swimming an impressive 2:11.36. Sophomore Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) took third in the race, finishing with a time of 2:16.49.

The Zips had two top-five finishes in the 200 butterfly, with junior Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) taking third with a time of 1:58.86, and senior Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) taking fourth with a time of 1:59.87.

Junior Andrea Bugariu (Shelby Twp., Mich.) was the highest placing Zip in the 1-meter dive, scoring a 261.25. Behind her were freshman Paige Kalik (Irwin, Penn.) who scored a 246, and freshman Emily Walkovich (Sylvania, Ohio) who scored a 204.50.

In the women's final event of the invitational, Akron's "Z" relay team of Nogaj, senior Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), Watson, and sophomore Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) took second in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 3:19.07.
