Zips Trio Displays Solid Performances at 2023 NCAA Championships, Gorecka, Gatrall Earn All-America Honors

Knoxville, Tenn. – A trio of Akron women's swimmers posted solid performances at the 2023 NCAA Championships as senior Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland), junior Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Abigail Daniel (Bristow, Va.) all Finished in the Top 20 on NCAA's biggest stage at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on March 15-18.
Both, Gorecka and Gatrall earned honorable mention All-America honors after setting new Mid-American Conference and program records while qualifying for the B finals in the 200 and 100 backstroke events, respectively.
Gorecka flew to a MAC and program record 200 Back in the preliminaries, clocking a 1:52.43. She finished second in the heat and 13th overall to place in the consolation finals. Gorecka posted a 1:52.63 in the B finals race, finishing 5th in the heat and claiming the 13th overall in the NCAA. Gorecka's 13th overall finish earned All-America accolades.
Gorecka also competed in the 100 Back and the 200 freestyle events. In prelims, Gorecka finished third in her heat and 41st overall in the 100 Back (53.08), while claiming fourth in the 200 Free heat and 31st overall with a 51.66 time.
Gatrall also qualified for a consolation final as she flew to a sixth-place finish in the fastest prelim heat of the 100 Back. Gatrall registered a MAC and program record 51.59 time to advance to the B final. Gatrall finished with the 16th fastest time (52.16) in the NCAA for All-America accolades.
Gatrall also competed in the 200 Back and the 50 freestyle events. In prelims, Gatrall finished seventh in her heat and 38th overall in the 200 Back (1:54.64), while winning her heat in the 50 Free heat and claiming the 34th overall best time (22.38), besting her 22.51 seed time.
Rounding out the NCAA Championship competitors for the Zips was Daniel, who competed in three events. Daniel registered the 17th best time in the NCAA in the 100 butterfly, posting a 51.66 time which was 0.04 seconds off qualifying for the B final and All-America status.
Daniel opened the weekend with a 1:56.50 time in the 200 individual medley, finishing third in the prelim heat and 24th overall. The final event of her NCAA debut was in the
200 Fly, claiming fourth in the prelim heat for a 43rd-best time (1:57.61).
