Akron Duo Earns MAC Cross Country Runner of the Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio - University of Akron freshman Bismack Kipchirchir (Eldama Ravine, Kenya) and sophomore Mary Munga (Nyandarau, Kenya) were honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's and Women's Cross Country Runners of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Kipchirchir turned in a strong performance in his Zips' debut, crossing the line in a career-best time of 24:29.5 in the men's 8K at the We Fly Ball State Championship Preview on Saturday (Sept. 14). His performance led Akron to a second-place finish in the men's team field.Â

Munga posted a season-best 6K time of 22:12.2 to capture the individual title at the We Fly Ball State Championship Preview on Saturday (Sept. 14). Her effort highlighted four Zips finishing in the top-10 in the women's 6K and sparked Akron to a second-place finish, one point behind Toledo.

Akron returns to competition traveling to Notre Dame, Ind., for Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite on Oct. 4.
