ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron men's track and field team made it back-to-back-to-back Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field titles capturing the program's 11th overall outdoor crown at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Ohio at Goldsberry Track on Saturday (May 17).
Akron Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Kendra Reimer-Gonzales was named as the MAC Men's Coach of the Year
Freshman Bismack Kipchirchir (Eldama Ravine, Kenya) was tabbed as the Most Valuable Performer of the Meet and league's Men's Track Freshman of the Year.
Freshman Rukia Omulisia (Nairobi, Kenya) was selected as the MAC's Women's Track Freshman of the Year
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Redshirt junior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) earned his fourth career MAC title winning the men's discus with a career-best mark of 200-10 (61.23m), the second-best throw in outdoor program history.
• Sophomore Mason Birch (Strongsville, Ohio) eclipsed a career-best mark of 7-0.25 (2.14m) in the men's high jump to earn his first career MAC title.
• Sophomore Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas) won his third league crown besting the field in the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 46.96.
• The Zips swept the top three spots in the men's 5,000 meters as freshman Moses Lekokei (Kilgoris, Kenya) took home his fourth league title besting the field in 14:18.33. Placing second and third, respectively, was Kipchirchir and sophomore Titus Kirui (Eldoret, Kenya) in 14:23.46 and 14:27.69.
• For only the second time in program history and first since 2009 the women's 4x100 relay team of sophomore Ayanna Stafford (Columbus, Ohio), senior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria), junior Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) and Omulisia garnered the league-title in a time of 44.51. The performance stands as the top time in outdoor program history (Since 2014).
• Kipchirchir earned All-MAC honors placing second in the men's 1,500 meters in a career-best time of 3:49.94, while Kirui finished sixth in 3:51.62.
• Omulisia followed netting her fourth career league crown besting the field in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 13.24. Her effort stands as the No. 2 time in outdoor program history.
• Nwokike collected a pair of runner-up finishes crossing the line in the women's 100 meters in 11.60 and in a career-best time of 23.24 in the women's 200 meters. Her performance in the 200 meters is the No. 2 mark in outdoor program history.
• Sophomore AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) collected All-MAC honors finishing second in the men's 100 meters in 10.52, while sophomore Rennie Gittens, Jr. (Miami, Fla.) placed fifth in 10.71.
• Jordan posted a career-best time of 20.74 in the men's 200 meters to finish second, while Styles crossed the line in 21.33 to place fourth.
• The men's 4x400 relay of sophomore Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.), Styles, freshman Jalen McCoy (Rochester, N.Y.) and Jordan earned a runner-up finish in 3:09.36, the fifth-fastest time in outdoor program history (since 2014).
• Redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) and freshman Bridget Bergen (Avon, Ohio) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the women's discus with marks of 161-6 (49.23m) and 156-10 (47.81m). Bergen's effort was a career-best mark.
• Sophomore Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) crossed the line in the men's 800 meters in a career-best time of 1:52.15 to place fourth.
• Junior Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) and sophomore Ryan Kamperman (Salem, Ohio) added fourth- and sixth-place marks in the men's discus with career-best throws of 174-1 (53.06m) and 163-11 (49.96m).
• Farrington netted team points placing fifth in the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 47.68.
• The women's 4x400 relay of Horn, Omulisia, senior Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) and Nwokike added team points placing sixth in 3:45.33.
• Horn placed seventh in the women's 400 meters in 55.42.
