COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team battled through the weekend rain to post 11 top 10 performances at the Jesse Owens Classic on Friday and Saturday (May 2-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Redshirt senior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) won the men's pole vault with a season-best clearance of 18-1.75 (5.53m).
• Senior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) eclipsed a career-high mark of 13-8.50 (4.18m) to place second in the women's pole vault.
• Redshirt junior Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) finished second in the women's women's javelin with a career-best mark of 146-0 (44.51m).
• Freshman Rukia Omulisia (Nairobi, Kenya) finished second in the women's 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.78.
• Redshirt junior Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) earned a runner-up finish in the men's discus with a mark of 177-0 (53.97m).
• Redshirt senior Brook Boes (Tiffin, Ohio) finished second in the women's discus with a mark of 144-9 (44.12m).
• The men's 4x100 relay of sophomores Rennie Gittens, Jr. and AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio), junior Kemari Robinson (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas) crossed the line second in a time of 42.17.
• Sophomore Christopher Vance (Parma, Ohio) placed fourth in the men's hammer with a mark of 198-7 (60.53m).
• Freshman El Hadji Abdourahmane Mbodji (Lucie Leclerc, Senegal) finished fourth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 43-6.50 (13.27m).
