Budler Honored as BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week; Borneo Named to Honor Roll

BIG EAST CONFERENCE MEN'S SOCCER WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS RELEASE
NEW YORK - University of Akron men's soccer redshirt senior Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) was honored by the BIG EAST Conference as its Men's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Sept. 9).

Redshirt sophomore Caleb Borneo (Morgantown, W.Va.) was also named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.

Budler anchored the defensive efforts for the Zips versus No. 16 Ohio State registering a season-best seven saves to extend the team's shutout streak to five to start the season. He is one of two goalies in the country to register an NCAA-best five shutouts en route to owning a 0.00 GAA and a 1.000 save percentage on the year.

Budler came up big in the match recording four saves in the opening stanza where the Buckeyes posted eight overall shots to send the contest into the intermission a scoreless draw. He was even more impressive in the second half making a trio of saves to help Akron maintain a 1-0 advantage after Borneo's game-winning goal in the 54th minute.

Budler faced six second-half corner kicks and five overall shots, three on net, at culminated his effort with his fifth clean sheet of the season.

Borneo garnered his first career brace to complete the Zips first victory in Columbus since 2016. He finished the game with two shots, both on goal, connecting on tallies in the 54th (53:07) and 77th (76:33) minutes, respectively.

His goal at the 53:07 mark off assists from sophomore Remi Agunbiade (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Matt Dreas (Covington, Ky.) proved to be the game-winning tally and stood as his first tally of the season. He then delivered his first career multi-goal performance finding the back of the net at the 76:33 mark off an assist from freshman Jose Pedro (Porto, Portugal).

The 11th-rated Zips return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 9) with a 7 p.m. showdown versus Western Michigan at FirstEnergy Stadium.
