November 12 | Women's Volleyball
ATHENS, Ohio – In the final match of the 2011 season, The University of Akron volleyball team lost 3-0 at Ohio on Saturday night (21-25, 17-25, 25-27). The Zips finish 4-25 overall and 1-15 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio, the East division leader, improves to 21-9 for the year and 13-3 in the league.
Senior Courtney Jarvis led Akron with nine kills, while freshman Mary Delich had seven kills and no errors in 14 attempts to hit .500 for the night. Sophomore Alex Cocklin added six kills, three digs and four blocks, while junior Paiton Twitty matched her career-best of three solo blocks, as UA turned in 10.0 team blocks to Ohio's 8.0. Also, sophomore Jill Paluch came up one shy of her career-high with 17 digs.
In the opening set, the Zips jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind the serve of Morgan Kuhn and went on to hold a 10-5 advantage until the Bobcats answered to tie it at 11 all. With the score still knotted at 16, the back-and-forth play continued as the teams stood locked at 21-21 late in the frame. Ohio closed the door, however, reeling off four-straight points to take the set.
In the second, the Bobcats took the lead out of the gate and held a 16-10 lead after a three-point run. The Zips tried to fight back but could not gain any ground, as Ohio stretched its margin to 23-15 and cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match.
Ohio ran out to another early lead in the third, ahead 10-5, but Akron came back to take a 12-11 lead after a five-point streak on Jarvis' serve. The Zips hung on to a slight advantage at 17-14, but Ohio responded to regain the lead at 19-18. Play was neck-and-neck until UA earned a set point at 24-23 after a kill by Kuhn, but the Bobcats kept it alive.
The Zips gained another set point at 25-24 thanks to a kill by Alex Wiederholt, but again Ohio struck back and this time would not be denied, using back-to-back kills to take the set 27-25 and earn the sweep.
Jarvis finishes her Akron career with 1,015 kills, as she became the first Zip since Brionna Patterson in 2008 to reach the 1,000-career kills milestone on Nov. 11 at Kent State.
