Swimming and Diving Rolls Past St. Francis (Pa.), 186-103

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron swimming and diving team rolled past visiting St. Francis (Pa.), 186-104, in a non-conference dual meet Saturday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium. The Zips (2-2 overall) recorded the top time in 13 of 16 events and swept the top three places in four swimming events, plus both diving events, en route to the win over the Red Flash (5-3).
The Zips took the top three places in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, in addition to the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. UA also grabbed the top two times in both the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Akron swam the final two events (the 200-yard IM and 400 yard freestyle relay) as exhibitions as the meet was already decided.
Individually, junior Catherine Carr won three individual events, the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.38), 500-yard freestyle (5:05.70) and 200-yard IM (2:08.97).
Sophomore Kelsey Ferrante swept the 100 and 200-yard backstroke for the third week in a row with winning times of 58.84 and 2:07.00, respectively, and junior Amy Dorow earned the top spot on the 1-meter (252.20) and 3-meter (224.85) springboard. Ferrante was also third in the 200-yard IM (2:14.90).
Also earning wins for Akron were: freshman Ashley Drazkowski in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.54), junior Kendra Colby in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.12), sophomore Amanda Lawson in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.82), and freshman Erin Seiler in the 100-yard butterfly (58.06).
Colby added a runner-up finish in the 100-yard freestyle (54.22) and Drazkowski was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.87). Lawson touched the wall third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.75 and Seiler posted a runner-up showing in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.80).
Senior Kelsea Cross was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (58.91), 100-yard butterfly (59.37) and 200-yard IM (2:12.01) and freshman Hannah Raspopovich took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.24) and 50-yard freestyle (24.76).
Senior Becca Emerich was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.65) and sophomore Taylor Hart was second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.69).
Freshman Ashley Niznik was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.59) and 100-yard freestyle (54.31), while senior Becca Zimmer was third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:43.92) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.98).
Following Lawson in the 200-yard breaststroke were seniors Rachel Szymkowiak (2:28.59) and Jessica Breymier (2:30.32) in second and third. In the diving, junior Emma Pierson earned two second place finishes and freshman Alice Hottensmith had a pair of thirds.
In the 400-yard medley relay, Akron's top relay of Ferrante, Colby, Seiler and Hart won in 3:58.62. The Zips also finished with the best time in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Hart, Niznik, Colby and Carr won in 3:37.75, just ahead of Akron's second relay of senior Rachel Hunsinger, Emerich, Hannah Raspopovich and sophomore Meagan Smith (3:37.93).
Akron will return to action on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 when it hosts the annual Zippy Invitational at Ocasek Natatorium.
