ROCHESTER, Mich. – Amanda Lawson placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke and was part of a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke as The University of Akron swimming and diving team took on Oakland in a dual meet on Friday afternoon. The Zips were topped 171-122 by the Grizzlies in the first event of 2013 for both programs.
Lawson touched the wall in 2:26.01 in the 200 and placed second in the 100 with a time of 1:08.06. Finishing ahead of her in the 100 was Kendra Colby at 1:05.95. Hannah Raspopovich clocked in at 1:08.09 to complete the top-three sweep.
Colby was also part of the Zips' first-place 400 freestyle relay team that posted a time of 3:40.88. Ashley Niznik, Ashley Drazkowski and Catherine Carr made up the balance of the quartet. The UA team of Kelsey Ferrante, Rachel Hunsinger, Meagan Smith and Emily Poland placed second in that event at 3:44.48.
Carr was responsible for three second-place individual finishes, doing so in the 200 butterfly (2:04.96), 500 freestyle (5:09.59) and 200 individual medley (2:10.61). Drazkowski earned a second-place time in the 1000 freestyle (10:36.95) as did Erin Seiler in the 100 butterfly (57.77)
In the diving tank, the Zips were paced by Carla McNamara on both boards. She posted a season-high score of 285.30 in the 1-meter event and 257.55 in the 3-meter, both good for second place. The 1-meter mark bettered the NCAA Zone Championships qualifying mark of 277.95 she established versus Ball State on Oct. 27.
Akron returns to competition on Jan. 18 when it travels to Mid-American Conference opponent Miami (Ohio).
