Baseball Drops a Pair to Appalachian State
February 18 | Baseball
ELON, N.C. – The Akron Zips baseball team dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader to Appalachian State at Latham Park.
UA (0-3) lost the first game 8-3, before dropping the nightcap 4-1. The Mountaineers improved to 2-1.
"Offensively, we just had too many strikeouts," UA coach Rick Rembielak said. "We are too passive at the plate when we are behind in the count. We also need to capitalize when we get ahead in the count."
The Zips are scheduled to wrap up the weekend against Elon on Sunday at noon ET.
Game 1 Recap
ASU produced a three run fifth too pull away from Akron in game one of the doubleheader, hanging on to win 8-3.
Sophomore Myles McVeigh was handed the loss, allowing five runs in 4.2 innings. Tyler Begun went 2-for-3 and Sam Watkins drove in a run to lead Akron at the plate. Redshirt freshman Dan Becks tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief.
Tyler Moore recorded the win for the Mountaineers in relief. Daniel Kassouf drove in four runs to lead the ASU attack.
McVeigh (0-1) cruised through the 3.2 innings before running into trouble. Three straight App. St. hits led to a 2-0 lead for the Mountaineers. Trey Holmes capped the rally with a two-run single that drove in Jeremy Dowdy and Tyler Tewell.
The Zips responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. A Sam Trecaso single and a Bryan White walk led off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt by Brady Stewart, Tracaso and White scored on back-to-back wild pitches by starter Ryan Arrowood.
The Mountaineers regained the lead in the fifth, by touching up McVeigh for three runs. After recording the first two outs of the inning, McVeigh allowed three straight walks, and Kassouf unloaded the bases with a triple to right center.
Sam Watkins drove in Akron's third run with a RBI groundout in the home half of the fifth. Matt Rembielak scored on the play, making the score 5-3.
ASU added single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to provide the final margin.
Game 2 Recap
The Mountaineers grabbed the nightcap with a 4-1 win. ASU manufactured single runs in four separate innings to claim the victory.
Sophomore Jon Pusateri pitched well in defeat, allowing three runs in six innings with six strikeouts. Devan Ahart tallied UA's lone RBI with a triple in the eighth. Freshman Pat Dyer threw an inning of shutout relief.
"Jon pitched very well," Rembielak said. "He had six punch outs to just three walks and had decent command of his stuff all game long."
Tewell drove in ASU's first run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first that scored Preston Troutman. Another sacrifice fly in the third gave the Mountaineers a two run lead. Will Callaway drove in Hector Crespo with his fly to right center.
Ahart plated Rembielak on a triple in the eighth for Akron's lone run. Rembielak had singled to lead off the inning.
