March 16 | Baseball
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The University of Akron baseball team surrendered a late lead in a 4-3 loss to North Dakota State on Friday at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Bison (12-5) scored single runs in both the eighth and ninth to top the Zips (4-12), who used three runs in the seventh to take its first lead of the game.
Samuel Trecaso, Brady Stewart, and Darius Washington all recorded multi-hit games for Akron. Freshman Pat Dyer tossed 5.1 innings allowing just two hits and two unearned runs in a no-decision. Scott Foster took the loss after allowing a run in two innings pitched.
An error by Tyler Begun at short led to NDSU's first run in the top of the third. Nick Colwell reached on the play and Tim Colwell advanced to second. After Dyer hit the next batter, Ben Harauf scored Tim Colwell unearned on a sacrifice fly.
Another sacrifice fly drove in the Bison's second run in the sixth, with this run also scoring unearned. Satzinger reached on a fielder's choice and was eventually driven in by Tyler Steen after advancing to third on an error by Sam Watkins at third.
Three Akron runs in the seventh gave UA its first lead of the game. Brady Stewart started the frame with a double down the right field line and scored on Devan Ahart's two-out single to left center. Begun then stroked a double to drive in Ahart and Matt Rembielak, who had reached on a walk.
The Bison answered to tie the game in the eighth, capitalizing on another Akron error. After a lead-off walk, NDSU loaded the bases with no outs with back-to-back sacrifice bunt attempts that UA failed to record outs on. Things looked to turn around when the Zips got a double play in the next at-bat, but a walk reloaded the bags for NDSU. A balk by Foster then allowed Satzinger to score and tie the game.
North Dakota St. retook the lead in the ninth, with Tim Colwell tripling past a diving Brandon Winter in left to start the inning. Zach Wentz then plated Colwell with a single to right.
Akron rounds out its spring break trip tomorrow, taking on Chicago State at 10 a.m. at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla.
