CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Akron baseball team was beaten 14-4 by Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon. The Governors used a six-run fifth inning to break open a three-run game at Hand Park.
Junior Samuel Trecaso and redshirt freshman Devan Ahart led Akron (1-8) with two hits and an RBI each. Freshman starter Pat Dyer was handed the loss after allowing five earned runs in four innings.
Greg Bachman led the Governors with two home runs and four RBIs. Casey Delgado recorded the win, allowing two earned runs in six innings.
APSU (7-3), who scored in each of the first five innings, got started in the first with a two-run longball by Bachman. Walks and hit batsmen then hurt Dyer as the Governors scored a run in both the second and third. Rolando Gautier was hit by a pitch and would score on Jon Clinard's two-out single to right in the second. Dyer then walked in a run in the third to give the home club a 4-0 lead.
UA halved the deficit in the top of four. Tyler Begun connected for a one-out double to left center and scored two batters latter when Trecaso singled through the right side. Sam Watkins – who had singled after Begun's double – made it a second Akron run by scoring on Kurt Gamby's fielder's choice.
The Governors responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The frame included Bachman's second home run of the game, this one a solo shot. A dropped fly ball by Joey Havrilak in right would later allow Reed Harper to score unearned.
After Ahart drove in a run with his single in the fifth, Austin Peay broke things open by plating six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Gautier led off the frame with a solo home run and would later drive in APSU's sixth score of the inning with a single. Four walks by reliever Jason McPeek helped keep the rally going.
Junior Jared Turocy drove in the final Akron tally with his single that scored Brandon Winter in the top of the ninth.
Akron will now get set for its week long spring break trip to Florida, which begins on Friday against Xavier in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Zips will play eight games during the trip.
