AKRON, Ohio – Canisius scored a combined eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held on to defeat the Akron baseball team 10-6 on Tuesday at Canal Park.
Junior Samuel Trecaso led Akron (16-25) at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Senior Sam Watkins batted 3-for-3, walked twice, and scored three runs.
Sophomore Tyler Smith (0-3) took the loss for UA, allowing three runs in an inning of relief. Sophomore starter Myles McVeigh tossed four innings, giving up one earned run, while redshirt freshman Dan Becks produced three innings of relief, giving up one run.
Eric Stolzenberg (1-1) earned the win for Canisius (22-21) after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Connor Panas drove in two to lead the Golden Griffins at the plate.
Trecaso snuck a two-out, bases-loaded single through the right side to give Akron a 2-0 lead in the first. Watkins and Brady Stewart scored on the hit after reaching on a single and a walk, respectively. Darius Washington had kept the inning alive by legging out an infield single.
Canisius put up a run in both the third and fourth inning to tie the game. The Golden Griffins then got to Smith for three runs on five hits in the fifth. Only one of the Canisius base knocks in the frame was well hit, as the visitors took advantage of three grounders that snuck through the infield and a blooper down the left field line to keep the rally going.
The UA pitching staff aided Canisius's five-run sixth inning by issuing three walks and hitting a batter. Becks would also balk home a run and allow a run to score on an errant throw to the plate on Panas's grounder back to the mound.
The Zips would fail to capitalize on several chances to put runs on the board throughout the game, stranding seven runners in scoring position. UA left 13 men on base overall.
Watkins scored from first thanks to aggressive base running in the seventh. The senior stole second on an Alex Tufts pitch that was in the dirt, moving to third as the ball caromed to the backstop. Catcher Brooklyn Foster's throw to third sailed into shallow left, allowing Watkins to sprint home.
The Zips started the ninth by loading the bases on two walks and an infield single by Dan Burant. Trecaso then plated his third run of the game with a single to right center. Jared Turocy brought in Burant with a sacrifice fly two batters later and Matt Rembielak singled to right to drive in Washington for the sixth Akron run of the game.
The Zips face Central Michigan this weekend in a crucial Mid-American Conference series at Lee R. Jackson Baseball Field. First pitch on Friday is at 3 p.m.
