AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team was swept by Central Michigan in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Lee R. Jackson Baseball Field on Sunday.
The Chippewas (20-25, 9-9 MAC) used three home runs to take a 7-1 opener, and won an offense-laden series finale, 10-9.
With the losses, Akron falls to 17-27 overall and 10-8 in the conference.
Game One Recap
Three Central Michigan home runs propelled the Chippewas to a 7-1 win in Sunday's opener.
Freshman Pat Dyer (3-3) took the loss for Akron, allowing five runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Matt Rembielak led the Zips at the plate, going 2-for-3.
Pat Kaminska (3-2) allowed just four hits to earn the win for CMU. Kaminska allowed just one unearned run in 6.1 innings. Jordan Adams hit a pair of solo home runs, while Tyler Hall hit a two-run long ball.
The Chippewas took Dyer deep in both the third and fourth innings. Hall smacked a two-run shot to right center in the third to open the scoring and Adams connected for a solo shot to left center in the fourth.
UA had halved the early CMU lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Jared Turocy reached on catcher's interference to start the frame and Rembielak bunted his way on in the next at-bat. After Devan Ahart bunted the runners over, Joey Havrilak plated Turocy with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Adams's second solo homer of the game put the Chippewas on top 4-1 in the top of the sixth. The visitors then added another run in the seventh, this time via a Jordan Dean sacrifice fly.
Reliever Myles McVeigh issued a pair of singles and walk to load the bases with one out in the eighth. Brendan Liberti then came in and walked the first two batters he faced to force home a pair and make the score 7-1.
Game Two Recap
Central Michigan claimed a back and forth battle in Sunday's series finale, scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and holding on to down Akron, 10-9.
Senior Sam Watkins and sophomore Brady Stewart each collected three hits for Akron, while freshman Matt Rembielak drove in three. Senior Scott Foster (3-4) took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings of relief.
Dietrich Enns (1-3) tossed 5.2 innings out of the bullpen to take the win for the Chippewas. Enns allowed three runs and struck out five. William Arnold led CMU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
With the game tied 9-9 in the top of the eighth and the bases loaded, UA made the call to the bullpen for redshirt freshman Andrew Fanning. Fanning got pinch hitter Reid Rooney to hit a chopper to the right side, but second baseman Tyler Begun's only play was to first and Arnold came across with what would be the game-winning run.
Akron scored three runs in both the first and second inning, helping neutralize three early runs by the Chippewas. Stewart hit a one-run single in the first, and Watkins drove in a pair with his base knock to left in the second. All three of Central Michigan's early runs were unearned. CMU took advantage of an error on Jared Turocy in left to score one in the first. In the second, starting pitcher Alex Loftin's errant throw to first on a grounder back to the mound let in two.
Loftin went four innings and allowed six runs, with three being earned. The righty struck out three, walked two, and gave up seven hits.
The early scoring continued as CMU fought back to tie the game 6-6 on Arnold's two-run double in the fourth.
Rembielak had the first of his two run-scoring singles in the bottom of the fifth. The base knock to center scored Samuel Trecaso and Darius Washington, giving UA an 8-6 lead.
The Chippewas jumped in front with three tallies in the top of the sixth. Singles by Eric Wrozek and Pat MacKenzie started the frame. Foster then allowed a Tyler Hall two-run double to center, knotting the game at eight. Arnold would then drive in Hall with a single down the right field line.
The Zips tied the game a final time in the seventh. Rembielak recorded the big hit once again, this time driving in Trecaso with a single to left center.
After CMU took the lead on Rooney's groundout in the eighth, closer Jon Weaver allowed just one hit over the final two innings to close out the game.
