March 22 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Akron (2-17, 0-1 MAC) baseball team lost the series opener to Ball State University (11-9, 1-0 MAC) by a score of 2-1 in a 10 inning affair on Friday afternoon. This was the first game of the Mid-American Conference schedule for Akron baseball.
Freshman JT Brubaker took the start on the mound for Akron in the MAC opener. Brubaker turned in a 6.0 inning performance with three strikeouts and one earned run allowed. The native of New Carlisle, Ohio was given a no-decision in the loss.
"JT [Brubaker] pitched very good, good enough to win," Head Coach Rick Rembielak said Friday. "As a freshman, he did excellent."
The loss was issued to Samuel Trecaso, whom came in relief to pitch the ninth inning. Trecaso threw for 1.0 innings with two walks, and allowed the winning run in the tenth inning. His record fell to 0-1 in the loss.
Overall, Akron registered seven hits on Friday afternoon. Senior Jared Turocy led the pack with two hits on the day. Turocy now has four hits total this season in 12 at-bats.
"I'm very disappointed in our offensive output. We were too passive when we had opportunities to go for the kill," Rembielak said following the loss. "We didn't stand in there and have our best at bats. I'm looking for a different mind set tomorrow out of everyone."
Junior Devan Ahart recorded the lone RBI in the loss to Ball State. Ahart knocked a single to left field in the third inning, scoring James Sheltrown on the play. Ahart ended the day with one base hit and one RBI, which pushes his team-leading hit total total to 21.
Four other Zips – Matt LaRocca, Tyler Begun, Gerrad Rohan and James Sheltrown – recorded singles in the loss. Rohan finished the game with one hit, one stolen base and one walk, while Sheltrown finished with one walk, one run and one hit.
Akron and Ball State will matchup again Saturday for a doubleheader set to begin at noon. Freshman John Valek III will start game one for UA, and Pat Dyer will take the mound for game two. Live stats and a video stream are available through the Akron baseball schedule page.
