GENEVA, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team traveled to the SPIRE Institute on Saturday afternoon to take on Ohio University in a dual meet, which resulted in a 156-144 victory for the Zips. OU finished second at the Mid-American Conference Championships last season.
The Zips jumped out to an early lead in the first event of the afternoon, the 200 medley relay, with a first and third place finish. The team of Kelsey Ferrante, Kendra Colby, Erin Seiler, and Hannah Raspopovich placed first at 1:45.85, while Ashley Niznik, Amanda Lawson, Meghan Pearson and Taylor Hart finished third at 1:48.17.
After the first event, freshman Kara Kaulius and junior Emily Poland proceeded to finish second and third, respectively, in the 100 freestyle. Kaulius ended the race with a time of 10:46.82, followed by Poland's time of 11:04.31.
Akron earned a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (Ferrante, 1:57.32) and a second-place time in the 100 backstroke (Ludwika Szynal, 58.52), before Colby and Lawson had a one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke. Colby ended the race at 1:06.33, with Lawson right behind at 1:07.79.
Seiler notched a second-place time of 2:10.38 in the 200 butterfly, which was followed by Raspopovich and Hart earning first and second, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Raspopovich touched the wall first at a time of 23.89, followed by Hart at 24.07.
In the diving pool, senior Carla McNamara posted the Zips lone top-three score at 278.10. McNamara followed up her performance in three-meter with a score of 278.25, good for first place. Sophomore Alice Hottensmith followed McNamara in second place with 273.52 points.
Hart registered her second, second-place time of the competition at 52.68 in the 100 freestyle, which was followed shortly by Niznik in third at 53.57. After the 100 freestyle, the Zips posted back-to-back first-place finishes in the 200 backstroke (Synzal, 2:02.29) and 200 breaststroke (Lawson, 2:24.50). Colby (2:24.71) took second in the 200 breaststroke.
Akron proceeded to finish the individual events with a third-place time in the 500 freestyle (Ashley Drazkowski, 5:11.29), a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (Seiler, 57.45), and first-and-second-place times in the 200 IM (Colby, 2:08.96 / Ferrante, 2:10.58).
The Zips were able to pull ahead in the final event of the afternoon, the 200 freestyle relay. Akron's relay team of Laura Savariau, Raspopovich, Hart, and Niznik notched first at 1:35.68, with Pearson, Drazkowski, Kaulius and Poland landing in third with a time of 1:40.91.
UA will head to Toledo, Ohio on Feb. 1 to face off against the Rockets for the final dual meet of the 2013-14 regular season.
