Volleyball Closes Road Trip with 3-0 Loss at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Akron volleyball team concluded its two-match Mid-American Conference West Division road trip with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 27-25) loss at Western Michigan on Saturday night.
The loss dropped the Zips to 8-15 overall, 2-6 in MAC play while the Broncos improved to 14-8 overall, 6-2 in league play.
The Akron attack was led by Mary Delich, who posted 10 kills, three block assists and a .350 hitting percentage. Karley Kusan led the Zips with 29 assists.
With the score tied at 5-5 early in the first set, the Broncos put together a 15-5 run to take control of the opening frame. The Zips would hit just .125 in the set before falling 25-14.
In the second set, the Akron defense would hold the Broncos to a .118 hitting percentage. The Zips jumped out to an early 4-0 lead helped by two attack errors by WMU and a service ace by Kelsey Wilson.
Western Michigan would battle back to tie the set at 4-all as both teams traded points over the next few serves. Three-straight attack errors by the Zips gave the Broncos a 10-9 lead, forcing Akron to call its first timeout.
With the Zips trailing 11-10, WMU was able to open a 20-14 lead before closing the set with a 25-18 win.
The third set proved to be a thriller and would eventually go to extra points. Akron opened the frame with three-straight points before WMU responded to take a 7-4 advantage.
Following an Akron timeout, the Zips would fall behind 13-7 before rallying to tie the match at 18-all, thanks to an 11-5 run. UA would take the 19-18 lead on the next serve, forcing the Broncos into their first timeout of the set.
From there, neither team gained more than a two-point lead. Delich tied the game at 25-25 before a ball-handling error by Kusan and a hitting error by Delich gave WMU the 27-25 win.
The Zips return home for a two-match homestand beginning on Friday, Oct. 24, when they play host to Central Michigan.
