BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The University of Akron volleyball team dropped a three set decision on the road to Bowling Green Friday night at the Stroh Center (25-17, 25-15, 25-18).
Julia Smagacz posted a team-high nine kills, and Anna Wenger followed with eight kills and a .318 hitting percentage, but it was not enough to combat the 15 kills from BGSU's Nicole Slimko. Wenger also had a hand in four block-assists, and only surrendered one miscue on the night.
Akron drops to 8-18 overall and 2-9 in the Mid-American Conference, while Bowling Green moves to 6-17 and 3-8 in league play.
Karley Kusan put up 28 assists to guide UA's offense, and Brenna Mack led the Zips with 14 digs on the defensive end. As a team, Akron out-dug Bowling Green for the match, 50-47.
The Akron defense struggled to contain the BGSU attack, as the Falcons tallied a .297 clip to the Zips' .135, including a .407 effort in the opening frame. Bowling Green was able to string together substantial runs in each of the three sets to keep Akron at bay.
The Zips face a quick turnaround when they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami Saturday. First serve between UA and MU is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Millett Hall.
