ATHENS, Ohio -- The University of Akron volleyball team struggled on the road Saturday night, falling to Ohio in three sets at the Convocation Center (25-14, 25-13, 25-10).
UA (7-12, 1-3 MAC) caught the Bobcats (11-4, 4-0 MAC), the Mid-American Conference East Division leaders, on a hot night as they hit .370 for the match and only committed eight attack errors.
Julia Smagacz led the Zips with six kills and Mary Delich added five. Karley Kusan posted 14 assists.
Defensively, Callie Mack tallied a match-high 12 digs, and Aubrey Kozer picked up five.
Ohio was led by a trio of players with seven kills – Karin Bull, Kelly Lamberti and Shelby Walker. MAC East Division Player of the Week Abby Gilleland notched 31 assists.
The Zips kept pace with the Bobcats in the earlygoing of the first two sets, but Ohio used a balanced attack to string together late runs down the stretch. Akron was hindered by 21 hitting errors and nine receiving errors on the night.
Akron returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 9, when it hosts Buffalo at James A. Rhodes Arena at 7 p.m. UA will round out the weekend of competition with its first MAC West Division opponent, welcoming Toledo on Saturday, Oct. 11. First serve between the Zips and the Rockets is set for 5 p.m., and there will be an alumni event following the match.
