Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup to Dayton, 9-2

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron (24-26) baseball team fell to the University of Dayton (23-26) by a final score of 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Akron received strong appearances from redshirt senior Joe Cochran and freshman Josh Davis as the due opened the game scoreless through the first four innings. Both Cochran and Davis went two scoreless frames with one hit allowed.
Redshirt junior Jon Pusateri took over on the mound in the fifth, and allowed six runs on three hits to give Dayton a six-run advantage. Pusateri's record fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Zips scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk by redshirt senior James Sheltrown and a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior Devan Ahart to make it 6-2 Flyers.
The 6-2 Dayton lead would hold through the sixth, seventh and eighth inning as the Zips had two more strong appearances out of the bullpen from sophomore Daulton Mosbarger and redshirt junior Andrew Fanning. Mosbarger went 1.2 innings with one hit allowed, while Fanning fanned three with no hits allowed in two innings.
Redshirt freshman Evan Jensen worked the ninth inning out of the Akron bullpen, but allowed Dayton to extend the lead with three runs, bringing the game to its final score of 9-2.
Akron registered five base hits on Tuesday with five different player. Sophomore Kris Simonton and Sheltrown had two walks apiece in the loss.
The Zips will look ahead to the final regular season Mid-American Conference series against rival Kent State University, beginning on Thursday at Canal Park for the annual Diamond Classic for the Kids. Tickets are just five dollars with all proceeds going to the Akron Children's Hospital. First pitch is 6:30 p.m., on Thursday.
The series will continue on Friday and Saturday at the KSU campus.
