LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior Mary Delich collected nine kills and hit .438 in front of her hometown crowd, but Akron was unable to combat Colgate's multiple offensive weapons in a 3-0 loss Friday night (25-22, 25-17, 25-16). The match was the opening contest of the Ameritas Players Challenge hosted by the University of Nebraska.
The result moves Akron to a 5-4 overall record and Colgate to 3-2 on the season.
Kelsey Wilson matched Delich's nine kills and added four service aces to propel UA's attack. Wilson entered the match ranked sixth in the nation in service aces.
Julia Smagacz put up seven kills and Anna Wenger added four for the Zips. Ashley Holder dished out 22 assists.
Colgate hit .323 for the match as a team, led by Kathleen Harris with nine kills and Diane Seely with eight. Harris also led both teams with 15 digs.
The first set was the most closely contested of the night. After falling into a shallow 4-2 hole, the Zips rattled off five unanswered points behind the strength of Aubrey Kozer's serve to go ahead, 7-4. UA would then work to build a 13-10 advantage and force a Colgate timeout.
The Zips tied the score at 16, 17, 18 and 19 before picking up three-straight points on kills from Wilson and Delich, and one of Wilson's signature aces. Colgate retaliated by scoring on six of the last seven plays to steal the set from Akron.
UA returns to the floor Saturday afternoon for a clash with Denver to close out tournament play. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET at Nebraska's Devaney Sports Center.
