AKRON, Ohio -- Akron had its offense firing on all cylinders on Friday, picking up two victories against Bryant and Binghamton on the opening day of the Akron Invitational at James A. Rhodes Arena.
UA improved to 4-2 on the season with the pair of victories. The Zips defeated Bryant in straight sets their home opener (25-20, 25-20, 25-20), followed by a 3-1 triumph over Binghamton in the night cap (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21).
Sophomore Amanda Bedell averaged 3.86 kills per set for the day, followed closely by Mary Delich with 2.86. Kelsey Wilson was effective in the middle for Akron, posting only three miscues to hit .407 across the two matches.
Ashley Holder was a workhorse at setter, never stepping off the floor and recording two double-doubles while putting up 10.43 assists per frame.
Bedell led the way for UA offensively against Bryant (2-4) with 11 kills, but it was Jessica Kloehn who stole the show. The redshirt freshman came off the bench to play two sets, tallying nine kills and only two errors in that span for a .583 clip.
Four Zips finished the match with double-digit digs, led by Holder and Anna Wenger with 13 apiece, helping Akron out-dig the Bulldogs by a whopping 56-37 margin. Akron's defense was a big part of the victory, as it held Bryant to a .088 overall hitting percentage for the match.
Bedell teamed up with senior Mary Delich in round two, putting together a career performance against Binghamton (0-5). Bedell issued a personal best 16 kills, and Delich followed up with her own career-high mark of 14. Delich and Wilson both eclipsed the .400 mark for the four-set contest, hitting .421 and .417, respectively.
Holder locked up her second double-double of the day, registering 40 assists and 17 digs, and Callie Mack led the defense with a team-high 20 digs.
The Zips will look to defend their home court in another doubleheader tomorrow on the final day of tournament play. Akron will face off against Drake at 3 p.m. and Austin Peay at 8 p.m. at the JAR.
