Swimming and Diving Holds Off St. Francis (Pa.) for 147-106 Win

LORETTO, Pa. – The University of Akron swimming and diving team won each of the first 10 events to resist a late push by St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon in a dual meet at Stokes Natatorium.
The Zips won 11-of-14 events on the afternoon, as they jumped out to an early lead in the first event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, when the team of Susan Franz, Kelsey Ferrante, Ashley Niznik and Taylor Hart finished at 3:34.93. Akron's B team took third. Both Franz and Ferrante paired the strong relay performance with an individual victory later in the meet.
The 400-yard IM followed as UA swept the event, led by three rookie Zips, Paloma Marrero Munoz (4:39.32), Kristen Vargas (4:42.61) and Allison Teske (4:47.27).
In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Kara Kaulius won her first of two events, out-touching teammate Natalie O'Brien who took second before the Zips again picked up the top three spots, coming in the 50-yard backstroke. Sophomore Luka Szynal led the way at 26.85 with Ferrante finishing at 27.71 and sophomore Laura Savariau taking third with a time of 27.88.
In the next event, junior Hannah Raspopovich took home the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 30.31.
The Zips would go one-two in the pair of events that followed with junior Erin Seiler picking up her first of two individual victories, coming in the 100-yard butterfly. Franz notched a first-place time of 24.90, edging Hart by .09 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle as Akron got out to a 103-28 advantage over the Red Flashes after the seventh event.
After Kaulius touched the wall for her second win of the afternoon and Natalie O'Brien followed for third in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Akron would go on to place one swimmer in the top two throughout each of the next three events to earn points toward the final tally and secure the victory.
The Zips improve to 3-2 in dual meet action this season and are the first team to defeat SFU at its home facility this season.
Akron returns to action when it travels to take on Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green for a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m.
