DAYTON, Ohio – Freshman starting pitcher Josh Lapiana held Dayton scoreless through his first 6.0 innings on the mound as Akron held a 1-0 advantage over the Flyers until a two-run seventh inning lifted UD over the University of Akron baseball team, 2-1, at Woerner Field at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Wednesday.
Akron's (17-17) go-ahead run reached base in the top of the ninth inning after designated hitter Daulton Mosbarger led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Brian Lees then reached on a walk, but the Zips would strand the pair on base to end the game.
The Zips' lone run came in the top of the first inning. Redshirt freshman outfielder Mason Mamarella reached on a bunt single and stole second to advance into scoring position. Havrilak posted Akron's only RBI with a single to center field that scored Mamarella for the early 1-0 lead.
The game's two freshmen starting pitchers stole the show as Lapiana (0-3) allowed just three hits through the first 6.0 innings. The Flyers (11-24) broke through Lapiana in the seventh and smacked a pair of doubles to score their first run and knot the game at one run apiece.
Mosbarger took over the pitching duties following Dayton's fist run. An inherited run would cross against the junior reliever to put Akron behind, 2-1.
Lapiana posted 6.1 innings pitched and gave up five hits and two runs. The lefty walked one and struck out two. Mosbarger tossed the final 1.2 innings and allowed three hits and recorded three strikeouts.
The Akron offense struggled against Dayton starter Mason Kutruff (5-0), who pitched 8.0 innings and gave up four hits and one run while walking one and striking out five.
Dayton out-hit the Zips, 8-4, and neither team posted an error. Akron stole five bases in the contest, led by Mamarella with two.
Akron is back in action on Friday, April 17 when it opens a three-game series at home against Miami (Ohio). First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field.
