BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – An RBI double from sophomore infielder Dom Iero and a two-run single from junior outfielder Kris Simonton in the ninth inning was not enough for the University of Akron baseball team to overcome its deficit as it fell to Bowling Green, 7-4, on Friday at Steller Field.
With the loss, Akron moves to 21-23 overall and 9-10 in the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green improves to 18-23 and 10-9 in MAC play.
Iero and Simonton were the only Zips to collect RBI on the day while Iero led the Zips at the plate with a pair of hits.
Bowling Green jumped out to a 1-0 lead after an RBI double in the bottom of the first. The double came after starting pitcher John Valek III fanned the first two batters he faced.
The Falcons added three runs in the bottom of the third after taking advantage of a pair of Akron miscues to lead 4-0.
Akron's first run in the game came in the next half inning when BGSU committed two errors of its own, with the first allowing sophomore catcher Brian Lees to reach base, and the second allowing him to score.
Bowling Green plated one run in each the sixth, seventh and eighth innings off RBI hits for a 7-1 advantage heading into the top of the ninth.
Akron then strung together a rally effort starting with a one-out single from junior infielder Gerrad Rohan. Junior infielder Billy Salem drew a walk to set up Iero and Simonton for their RBI knocks.
Valek (5-5) was tagged with the loss after turning in 5.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and five runs, four earned. The junior left-hander fanned four and walked two.
UA struggled to reach base in the affair, being out-hit by the Falcons, 15-7. The Zips posted three errors to Bowling Green's two.
