BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – A pair of RBI singles from junior infielder Gerrad Rohan and junior outfielder Kris Simonton combined with a passed ball to plate three runs in the eighth inning on Saturday as the University of Akron baseball team defeated Bowling Green at Stellar Field, 6-4.
Akron entered the eighth inning trailing the Falcons 4-3. Sophomore catcher Brian Lees doubled down the right field line to fuel Akron's three-run inning. Rohan singled home Lees and crossed home on Simonton's single to center for the go-ahead run. Simonton advanced to third on an error, setting him up to score Akron's insurance run on a passed ball.
Sophomore infielder Dom Iero collected a game-high two RBI as four Zips posted multi-hit games. Rohan and Lees each registered two hits apiece and two runs scored with Rohan also adding an RBI.
Defensively, redshirt senior closer Matt LaRocca was awarded his ninth save of the season. LaRocca tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, serving up one hit and two strikeouts to seal Akron's win.
LaRocca took over after junior starter JT Brubaker's exit. Brubaker hurled 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. He fanned four and walked none and improved to 5-4 on the season.
The Zips and the Falcons traded runs throughout the affair as Bowling Green divided its four runs between four different innings in the back-and-forth battle.
With Akron trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth, Iero clubbed a two-run double to give Akron a short-lived 3-2 edge.
BGSU posted one run in the sixth to knot the game at 3-3 before a run in the seventh gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead through seven.
Overall, Akron out-hit Bowling Green, 12-9. The Falcons posted three errors while Akron had one.
The Zips and Falcons return to action on Sunday for the rubber game at Steller Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
