East Lansing, Mich. – The Akron Zips women's golf team finished the 33rd annual Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course, tying Western Michgan for fifth overall with a 971 (+53) 54-hole total on Sunday.
"Today, nothing came easy for us, so I was very proud of the team for battling through every shot and finishing strong," Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "This weekend was a great test for us as a team, and we are looking forward to our next challenge."
Sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) led the Zips with a 3-over par 75 final round score, brining her tournament total to 226 (+10). Nicholson carded nine pars and four birdies paired with three bogeys and two doubles. Nicholson finished 14th overall.
Sophomore Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) and freshman Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) climbed two spots on the leaderboard to finish 20th overall after recording a pair of 77 (+5) scores en route to a 229 (+13) total. Dull posted 11 pars and a birdie while Wentworth used 11 pars and two birdies.
Junior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) also moved up the leaderboard, climbing from 40th to 38th with a final round 79 (+7). Her finished the 54-hole tournament with 235 (+19) total, while teammate senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) posted an 81 (+9) to finish 42nd overall with a 236 (+20) performance.
Miami held on to win the tournament with an 860 (-4) total, while Princeton earned runner-up 900 (+13). The Hurricanes Dewi Weber won medalist honors with a 212 (-2) 54-hole total.
The Zips will be back I action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4, at the 9th Annual Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo. at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
