Silver Lake , Ohio – The Akron Zips women's golf team opened the Mid-American Conference Championships with a 310 (+22) team score, ranking fifth overall after the initial 18 holes at Silver Lake Country Club on Friday.
The Zips were led by senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico), junior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.), and freshman Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) with 77 (+5) scores each at the par 72, 6,177-yard course. All three players are currently tied for 13th place on the leaderboard. Velasco-Villanueva posted two birdies mixed with nine pars and seven bogeys, while Her and Wentworth carded a birdie apiece.
Sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio ) and Makayla Dull rounded out Akron's scoring with 79 (+7) and 81 (+9) scores, respectively.
Kent State currently leads the team scoring, establishing a 15-stroke lead over the field with a 289 (+1) team score. The Golden Flashes also control the individual leaderboard as Pimnipa Panthong, Wad Phaewchimplee, and Karoline Stormo are all tied for first place with even-par 72 scores, while Michaela Finn follows with a 1-over 73 tally.
Saturday's second round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. start at Silver Lake Country Club. Akron is scheduled to open the round from hole No. 1 with the first group starting at 8 a.m. – Dull (8:00), Nicholson (8:10), Velasco-Villanueva (8:20), Wentworth (8:30), and Her (8:40).
