Silver Lake, Ohio – Sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) fired a 1-under par 71 second-round score as the Zips climbed one spot on the leaderboard at the Mid-American Women's golf Championships at Silver Lake Country Club on Saturday.
Akron improved its team scoring by three stokes, finishing the second 18-holes with a 307 (+19) tally. The Zips currently rank fourth overall with a 310-307 – 617 (+41) 36-hole total. Ohio and Northern Illinois are tied for second (606, +30), while Kent State leads the team scoring with a 587 (+11).
Nicholson climbed 18 spots on the leaderboard, moving from 23rd to tied for fifth overall with her second-round performance. The 2016 MAC Champion posted 13 pars and three birdies mixed with two bogeys for the 71 (-1) effort and currently owns a 150 (+6) tournament total.
Freshman Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) followed in scoring for the Zips with a second 77 (+5) round. Wentworth's 154 (+10) 36-hole total is tied for 14th on the leaderboard, while junior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) carded a 79 (+7) second-round effort to move to a 21st stalemate with a 156 (+12) tournament total.
Senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) and sophomore Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) rounded out the Zips' scoring with a pair of 80 (+8) scores. Velasco-Villanueva is currently tied for the 23rd spot at 157 (+13), while Dull is tied at 38th overall with a 161 (+17) two-day total.
Kent State still holds the top four spots on the individual leaderboard as Michaela Finn holds the top spot with a 143 (-1) two-round total. Pimnipa Panthong 147 (+3) is second, Wad Phaewchimplee 148 (+4) is third, and Karoline Stormois fourth 149 (+5).
Sunday's final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the par 72, 6,177-yard Silver Lake course. Akron is slated to be first off the tee at hole No. 1 as Dull will get the final day of the tournament started, followed by Velasco-Villanueva (8:10), Her (8:20), Wentworth (8:30), and Nicholson (8:40).
