AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team returns to the pool this weekend as it competes in the seventh annual Magnus Cup Invitational hosted by Cleveland State University.
The Magnus Cup is a three-day invitational spanning from Nov. 16-18, at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The event starts at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, with the preliminary round, followed by finals at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, is set to mirror the first day of competition, while the final day, Sunday, Nov. 19, begins at 9 a.m. with finals beginning at 3 p.m.
The top 40 swimmers will advance to A, B, C, and D finals, however, only the top 20 will score in each event. Live results for the invitational can be found on the Meet Mobile app.
The 15 teams joining the Zips this weekend are California University of Pennsylvania, Cleveland State, University of the Cumberlands, Duquesne, Delaware, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Buffalo, Indiana State, Saint Francis (Pa.), Youngstown State, Simon Fraser, Soka University, Xavier, Fairmont State and West Virginia Tech. Nine of the 16 schools will also have their respective men's program competing as well.
A season ago, in Cleveland, the Zips squad captured their third consecutive Magnus Cup Invitational crown with a team score of 1,809.5 points. Akron finished first in 23 events over the course of the weekend.
So far this season, Akron has picked up wins at the Akron Zips Classic, and in duals against Buffalo, Denison and Ball State. The Zips have only fallen short to No. 15-ranked Ohio State by a score of 174.5-124.5.
The Zips have three relay teams ranked among the top 10 nationally, including the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.91), 800 freestyle relay (7:09.10) and 400 medley relay (3:37.33).
Following the Magnus Cup, the Zips return home to host the Zippy Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
