49th Annual Furman Intercollegiate Next for Men’s Golf

Greenville, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team traveled to Greenville, S.C. for the 49th annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday-Monday, March 23-25, hosted by Furman University.
"We look forward to the Furman Intercollegiate every year," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "Golf is a humbling game, and last week was a humbling experience. We did not play to our expectations. We look to pick ourselves up and bounce back with great play against a competitive field."
The 54-hole event will be played at Furman University Golf Course, a par 72 course that spans 6,994 yards. Fans can follow the three-day event via GolfStat Live Scoring.
Akron is the only Mid-American Conference member to participate in the 21-team field that includes host Furman, Akron, Charleston Southern, Dartmouth, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Harvard, High Point, James Madison, Marshall, North Florida, Presbyterian, Samford, Temple, USC Aiken, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wichita State, Winthrop, and Yale.
The Zips' starting five includes junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), senior George Baylis (Ascot, England), junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), and freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden).
Tee times for the first two rounds are set, as Akron opens the tournament from the No. 1 tee, beginning at 12:40 p.m. ET on Friday. McFarland will get Akron started while Sunden (12:50), Appleby (1:00), Baylis (1:10), and Grayson (1:20) follow.
Last year, Akron finished 12th out of 21 teams at the Furman Intercollegiate after registering a 291 (+3) final round team score. The Zips finished the 54-hole event with an 874 (+10) total, led by a Baylis with a 217 (+1) total. Grayson followed with a 3-over 219 score, recording 73 (+1) scores all three rounds. McFarland added a 234 (+18) effort.
In 2015-16, Baylis placed fourth overall with a 7-under par 209 stroke effort. He climbed three spots on the leaderboard with a final round 2-under par 70 that included 16 pars and two birdies. He added rounds of 68 (-4) and 71 (-1) while finishing the event with 38 pars, seven birdies, six bogeys, and three eagles.
Grayson carded 67 (-5) and followed with 74 (+2) final round showing. He opened the tournament with a 77 (+5) and finished 32nd overall with a 218 (+2) three-day total with 33 pars, 12 bogeys, eight birdies, and an eagle.
