Zips Volleyball Tops St. Francis (PA) in Home Opener, 3-0
Â
Â
AKRON, OHIO -Â The Akron volleyball team defeated St. Francis (PA) 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-15) on Friday night in its first match of the Akron Invitational.Â
Â
Akron improved to 3-4, while St. Francis (PA) fell to 0-7 on the season.
"We handled our side of the net fairly well tonight. I was happy with our ability to serve our targets more consistently than we have so far this season. I look forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow against Eastern Kentucky and Seton Hall" said coach Tom Hanna.Â
Â
Leading the way for the Zips offensively was junior Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio), who totaled nine kills to just two errors. Also contributing were seniors Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.), and Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) who finished with seven and five kills, respectively, while not finishing with any errors between the two of them. Defensively, junior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) finished with 9 digs while Richardson added four solo blocks.
Â
The Zips were in control from the first set, which helped set the tone for the rest of the match. Sharrits served up an ace to begin the match. The Red Flash put up a good fight early, siding out almost immediately on every point.
Â
The two teams went point-for-point until a four-point run, capped off with a kill by Karsner put the Zips ahead, 14-10. After a point by the Red Flash, the Zips put together two more four-point runs, which propelled them to win the set, 25-13.
Â
Akron showed no signs of slowing down, as they opened the second set on a 5-0 run. After the Red Flash began to show signs of life, responding with three consecutive points of its own, the Zips would go on a six-point run, putting them ahead, 15-5.Â
Â
The Zips went on to take the second set handedly, 25-11.
Â
The third set followed suit of the second, as the Zips once again came out the gate firing, gaining an early 8-0 lead on the Red Flash. A strong offensive attack, paired with solid passing and defense led the zips to win the set, 25-15, and ultimately the match.
Â
The Zips continue action on Saturday, Sept. 14 as they wrap up the Akron Invitational with a doubleheader. Akron takes on Eastern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m., and will close out with Seton Hall at 7 p.m.
