NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Akron's women's swimming and diving team is sitting at third place after day one of the Shamrock Invitational.Â
Â
The Zips got off to a strong start in the 200 medley relay, as their "Z" relay team of Lauren Cooper (Dublin, Ohio), Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) took second with a time of 1:39.89.

Sophomore Olivia Gardner (Bromsgrove, England) followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:17.75.

Nogaj continued to impress in the water as she has all season, finishing second in the 100 butterfly with an impressive time of 52.83, half a second behind the first-place finisher.

Later in the 100 breaststroke, Garcia had another second-place finish, touching the wall at 1:01.13.

Cooper was the highest placing Zip in the 100 backstroke turning in a time of 54.91, good enough for a fourth-place finish.Â

In the three-meter diving event, freshman Paige Kalik (Irwin, Penn.) was Akron's top diver, placing fifth with a score of 274.65. Additionally, junior Andrea Bugariu (Shelby Twp., Mich.) and freshman Emily Walkovich (Sylvania, Ohio) came in 8th and 14th, respectively.Â

After one day of competition, Akron sits in third place, while tournament host Notre Dame is in the lead.

The Shamrock Invitational concludes on Saturday, Jan. 25, with the final session beginning at 11:15 a.m.
