Akron Swimming Defeats Ohio, 207.5-92.5

ATHENS, Ohio – The Akron women's swimming team won 14-of-16 events en route to a 207.5-92.5 victory over the Ohio Bobcats at the Ohio University Aquatics Center on Friday.

The Zips opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of freshman Madelyn Gatrall, junior Andrea Fischer, sophomore Weronika Gorecka and sophomore Rachel Schiffli flew to a 1:45.55 time. The relay team earned 11 points for the Zips, while Brooke Lamoureux, Rachel Sabotin and Gail Workman claimed the second through fourth spots in the 1000 freestyle with 10:21.14, 10:28.98 and 10:34.53 times, respectively.

Next, Akron won 12-consecutive events as Astrid Halvorsen started the dominant performances. Halvorsen won the 200 Free (1:54.24) and Paula Garcia touched third (1:55.34) followed by Olivia Derodes (1:57.27) in fifth place.

Gatrall earned her second win of the meet when she claimed the 100 backstroke with a 56.43 time and Margaret Clough tied Ohio's Riley Bunstine for third place at 59.47. Fischer won the following event (100 Breast, 1:04.73) for a second win of the meet and Madeline Dyer and Sara Bozso touched third (1:06.50) and fourth (1:07.01).

Akron went on to claim first and second in four straight events as Sarah Watson and Sabotin threw the first one-two punch in the 200 butterfly. Watson claimed the top spot with a 2:01.94 and Sabotin clocked a 2:05.04 time. Sofia Henell and Schiffli swept the next event (50 Free) with 24.04 and 24.22 times, and Paige Kalik and Andrea Bugariu finished first and second in the 3 Meter Diving event.

In the 100 freestyle, Akron won gold, silver and bronze as Schiffli, Gatrall and Derodes completed the trifecta with 53.08, 53.55 and 54.34 times. Olivia Gardner kept the winning streak alive with a 2:03.90 time in the 200 Back and Garcia won the 200 Breast (2:17.62). Halvorsen and Watson secured two additional wins, winning the 500 Free (5:03.45) and 100 Fly (54.58).

The run was snapped after Akron swept the top three spots off the 1 Meter boards. Kalik claimed the top spot followed by Bugariu and Megan Nugent. Ohio won the 200 individual medley as the Bobcats' Gabrielle Brust stopped the timer at 2:07.14 with Akron's Gardner on her heels (2:08.88).

Akron recorded the victory in the final event of the meet, as the 400 freestyle relay team of Garcia, Watson, Schiffli and Victoria Kaufman won with a 3:30.50 time while Sabotin, Lauren Cooper, Derodes and Andrea Fischer claimed third (3:34.49).

Akron will be back in action at Notre Dame's Shamrock Invite on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23.

ATHENS, Ohio – The Akron women's swimming team won 14-of-16 events en route to a 207.5-92.5 victory over the Ohio Bobcats at the Ohio University Aquatics Center on Friday.

The Zips opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of freshman Madelyn Gatrall, junior Andrea Fischer, sophomore Weronika Gorecka and sophomore Rachel Schiffli flew to a 1:45.55 time. The relay team earned 11 points for the Zips, while Brooke Lamoureux, Rachel Sabotin and Gail Workman claimed the second through fourth spots in the 1000 freestyle with 10:21.14, 10:28.98 and 10:34.53 times, respectively.

Next, Akron won 12-consecutive events as Astrid Halvorsen started the dominant performances. Halvorsen won the 200 Free (1:54.24) and Paula Garcia touched third (1:55.34) followed by Olivia Derodes (1:57.27) in fifth place.

Gatrall earned her second win of the meet when she claimed the 100 backstroke with a 56.43 time and Margaret Clough tied Ohio's Riley Bunstine for third place at 59.47. Fischer won the following event (100 Breast, 1:04.73) for a second win of the meet and Madeline Dyer and Sara Bozso touched third (1:06.50) and fourth (1:07.01).
