Akron Completes Five-Set Comeback Over William and Mary

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Despite trailing 10-7 in the fifth set, the Akron volleyball team (4-2) came back to defeat William and Mary 3-2 in the final match of the Virginia Tournament on Sunday morning with scores of 25-11, 24-26, 19-25, 26-24 and 15-12.
Following the match, senior Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) was named to the Virginia All-Tournament Team.
The Zips had four players reach double figures in kills with senior Jen Durra (Painesville, Ohio) leading the way with 15 kills. Seniors Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) and Kelly each had 13, while senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) added 12 kills. Senior Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) led the team with 18 digs, while Kelly recorded a team-high five blocks.

Akron dominated the opening set as the Zips jumped out to a 9-3 lead. A 5-1 run in the middle of the frame gave Akron a 14-6 lead, before the Zips used five kills and an ace that secured the set No. 1 win for Akron. The Zips' defensive efforts held the Tribe to a .000 hitting percentage.

The Zips led by as many as seven (14-7) in the second, but the Tribe chipped away at the Akron lead, cutting it to 14-11. William and Mary gradually cut its deficit and eventually both teams were knotted at 24-24. Both teams battled point for point as the set required extra plays, but the Tribe scored the final two points and put William and Mary on the scoreboard.

After a slow start to the third set for the Zips, Akron registered five unanswered points and took an 8-5 lead. The Tribe edged their way back on top and led by as many as five (20-15). The Zips came within three (22-19), but William and Mary used back-to-back kills and a block to secure the No.3 set, 25-19.

Trailing 11-6, Akron orchestrated a 6-1 run that evened the score at 12-12. The Zips and Tribe tied the score six more times before a kill and a block assist from Adleta and Karleighana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) claimed the 26-24 fourth set victory.

William and Mary jumped to a 10-7 lead in the final set before an ace by junior Lauren Latka (Zionsville, Ind.) and back-to-back kills tied the set at 10. With both teams locked at 12-12, the Zips pulled away with three straight points and took the final frame 15-12 to seal the match.

Akron will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11 in Chicago, Ill. as DePaul hosts a tournament featuring Akron, Penn and Oakland.
