Akron Volleyball Drops Two at Top Dawg Challenge

INDIANAPOLIS, IND.- The Akron Zips Volleyball team (0-3) dropped a pair of matches on Saturday to Oakland (3-2) and tournament host Butler (3-2) in the final day of the Top Dawg Challenge at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Karleighana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Zips dropped a tight 3-2 decision against Oakland (17-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 10-15). Akron had three players record double-figure kills with Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) leading the offensive efforts with 15 kills. Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) finished with 13 kills, while Jones added 11 kills and a .417 hitting percentage.

Baylee Vought (Fort Mill, S.C.) dished out a team-high 27 assists, while Avery Brown (Decatur, Ga.) added 16.

Akron's defense above the net was strong out-blocking Oakland, 14-6. In the second set victory, the Zips limited Oakland to just a .035 hitting percentage, while Akron struck with a .306 percentage. The Zips struggled in the final set comeback only securing four kills and hitting -.061 percent as the Golden Grizzlies capitalized on six Akron errors.

Akron dominated in the second and third sets hitting .206 percent and .186 percent. Despite three tied scores in the second set, Akron never let Butler take a lead, and never let off the gas when the Zips sprinted out to a 10-0 lead in the third set.

The Zips were led by Ochaya who collected 13 kills, while Jones and Johnson each had 12 kills. The serving was no problem for Akron as the squad served 10 aces with Ochaya leading the way with five.

The Butler defense dominated above the net out-blocking Akron, 16-0, and capitalizing on 34 Akron errors.

Akron will compete in the Seton Hall Invite on Sept. 2-3. The Zips open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 2 with Iona at 4:30 p.m. Akron will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 3 with Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m. and George Mason at 4:30 p.m.
