Daniel Breaks 100 Fly Records, Akron Leads Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – Akron junior Abigail Daniel flew to a 51.31 time in the 100-yard butterfly, resetting the Mid-American Conference record, Akron program record, Ocasek Natatorium record and Zippy Invitational record as Akron holds a commanding 249-point lead over the field at the 2023 Zippy Invitational.
Daniel opened the third day of the Zippy Invite with a gold in the 100 Fly, replacing USA Olympic swimmer Regan Smith's 51.63 pool record and her own school mark and MAC record of 51.65. Daniel closed the meet with a second win as she swam the final leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay with the fastest time of 22.07. Rebecca Reid led off (23.33) followed by Madelyn Gatrall (22.41) and Weronika Gorecka (22.59) for the 1:30.40 time.
The Zips also secured the silver medal in the 200 Free Relay as Rachel Sabotin (23.02), Mia Latimer (23.30), Brienne Trumpower (22.72) and Aislinn Holder (22.81) posted a 1:31.85 Sabotin added a runner-up finish in the 100 Fly, clocking a 52.71 time.
Akron captured four additional gold medals in the 100-yard backstroke, 110-yard breaststroke, 400-yard individual medley and 1-meter diving. In the 100 Back, Gatrall posted the win with a 52.36, while Gorecka placed second (52.85) and Reid captured third (53.50) – all three times were NCAA B Cuts.
The Zips took first, third and fourth in the 100 Breast as Sarah Bozso touched first with a 1:01.42 followed by Madeline Dyer (2nd - 1:02.13) and Claire Cox (4th – 1:02.18).
In the 400 IM, Astrid Halvorsen finished with a 4:18.68 time for the win, closely followed by Kendall Craig with a runner-up 4:19.20 time.
The Zips also claimed the gold medal off the 1-meter boards as Elizabeth Noble registered 288.25 points which stands as an NCAA B Cut. Claiming third place was Laurel Smith with 263.45 points.
Kaja Reinhardt added to the Zips' medal count with a second-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:49.22 time.
On the men's side, UCSB's Matt Driscoll set the 100-yard backstroke meet and pool records as lead-off in Thursday evening's 400-yard medley relay with a 46.86 time. On Saturday, he broke the 100 Back record again in prelims (46.77) and for a third time in the finals (46.31). Additionally, UCSB's Austin Sparrow broke the meet and pool records in the 200-yard freestyle prelims (1:35.67) and again in the finals (1:35.26).
Akron will be back in action Sunday morning for the final day of prelims beginning at 9 am.
