MAC Championships: Zips Lead Day 2, Pool and School Records Fall

OXFORD, Ohio – Akron swimming and diving leads the 2023 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships after the second day of competition with 246.5 points as the Zips set a new pool record and set a new school standard.

The 200 Free Relay team flew to a new pool record of 1:29.83 as sophomore Abigail Daniel (Bristow, Va.) led-off the race with a second-fastest 22.43 time. Senior Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) and sophomore Rebecca Reid (Donaghadee, United Kingdom) posted 22.54 and 22.50 times, respectively, while senior Rachel Schiffli (Indianapolis, Ind.) swam the fasted leg to secure the gold, clocking a 22.36 time.

Prior to the Zips lone gold medal, Daniel broke an Akron school record in the 200-yard individual medley with a 1:56.26 time, replacing the 1:56.42 time set by Sarah Watson in 2021. Daniel finished second overall, while Gatrall also captured a silver medal with a 22.51 performance in the 50-yard freestyle.

Senior Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.) claimed third overall in the 1-meter diving event, while several other contributed points to the Zips' total, including Astrid Halvorsen (4:52.16, 500 Free), Abigail Workman (4:54.69, 500 Free), Andrea Galisteo (4:57.83, 500 Free), Rachel Sabotin (1:59.74, 200 IM), Reid (2:00.42, 200 IM), Giovanna Cappabianca (2:01.03, 200 IM), Kendall Craig (2:00.42, 200 IM), Madeline Dyer (2:02.03, 200 IM), Andrea Fischer (2:03.11, 200 IM) and Schiffli (23.02, 50 Free).
