Pikunas, van Son Lead Zips Golf at Rio Verde

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Senior Jacinta Pikunas fired a team-low, one-under par final round to lead Akron as the Zips finished fourth overall at the at 2023 Rio Verde Invitational.
Akron finished the 54-hole tournament fourth overall, carding a 309-295-304 – 908 (+44) and scored better than six other Mid-American Conference programs in the 18-team field.
Pikunas finished in the Top 5 with steady play in the first and second rounds with 3-over and 2-over ledgers. She added a 71 (-1) final round to climb eight positions on the leaderboard and cut one stroke from her final scored of 220 (+4).
Pikunas recorded nine birdies, while teammate sophomore Daphne van Son followed in team scoring with 222 (+6) while also collecting nine birdies on the weekend. She posted a field-low 3-under par 69 score in the second round to climb 18 spots on the leaderboard. She added rounds of 75 (+3) and 78 (+6) to finish ninth overall.
Senior Jessica Hahn was third in scoring for Akron (+13, 79-72-78 – 229), while Abbi Fleiner and Hridhika Vora rounded out the Zips' starting five with 243 (+27) and 244 (+28) scores, respectively.
Akron will be back in action at Lake Jovita Golf Club in Dade City, Fla., traveling to the Spring Break Shootout hosted by Western Kentucky and Florida Gulf Coast on Monday and Tuesday, March 13-14.
