Kipchirchir and Munga Lead Akron at NCAA Great Lakes Cross Country Regional

NORTON, Ohio – University of Akron cross country freshman Bismack Kipchirchir (Eldama Ravine, Kenya) and sophomore Mary Munga (Nyandarau, Kenya) each garnered All-Region accolades to highlight the effort of the Zips at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships at the Silver Creek Cross Country Course on Friday (Nov. 15).
Kipchirchir garnered All-Region honors on the strength of a career-best time of 29:15.4 to earn a fourth-place finish. Kipchirchir will now await the NCAA Selection Show on Saturday (Nov. 16) to see if he earned the third-ever NCAA Championship berth for a Zip.
Munga registered a career-best 6K time of 20:13.7 en route to a 25th-place finish to earn All-Region accolades in the women's field.
In the women's race, sophomores Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio) and Kayla Sucharski (Galena, Ohio) were next across the line for the Zips adding career-best times of 20:55.4 and 22:00.4.
Rounding out Akron's scoring efforts were seniors Danielle Honaker (Ashland, Ohio) and Grace Henderson (Rostraver Township, Pa.), who crossed the line in 22:10.7 and 22:12.2, respectively. Henderson's performance stands as a career-best time.
Additionally, freshman Jadyn Towns (Berlin Heights, Ohio) garnered a career-best effort of 22:48.6, while senior Halle Sebest (Poland, Ohio) capped her Akron cross country career with a time of 22:50.2.
In the men's race, freshman Moses Lekokei (Kilgoris, Kenya) was next across the line for Akron registering a career-best time of 29:53.5.
Rounding out the scoring efforts for the Zips was redshirt senior Heriberto Alvarez (Oswego, Ill.), junior Taye Gonzalez (Lewis Center, Ohio) and freshman Emil Stanford (Sunbury, Ohio), as the trio crosse the line in 32:13.9, 33:30.4 and 33:39.9, respectively. Stanford registered a career-best time
Additionally, senior Justin Zapotoczny (Navarre, Ohio) posted a career-best time of 33:59.2.
The NCAA Championship Selection Show is set for 5 pm on Saturday (Nov. 16).
